***DAY #3: SCHUMER SHUTDOWN*** Congressman Patronis: Schumer Shutdown Freezes Flood Insurance During Hurricane Season
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jimmy Patronis held a virtual press conference warning that Congressional Democrats and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s refusal to pass a clean Continuing Resolution (CR) has frozen the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) at the height of hurricane season. This political gridlock leaves Florida families and homeowners vulnerable as the Atlantic remains active, developing major storms in recent weeks. Congressman Patronis urged Senate Democrats to stop playing politics and gambling with the lives of Florida families.
Congressman Jimmy Patronis said, “We’re in the middle of hurricane season, and Chuck Schumer’s shutdown has left families without access to flood insurance. NFIP cannot issue or renew policies, meaning Floridians who need coverage to close on a home or keep their insurance active are left stranded. After Hurricanes Michael and Ian, I saw firsthand how essential NFIP is to recovery. To play politics with such a critical program is reckless and dangerous. Florida families deserve better. If you are still in need of federal assistance, my office remains open and continues to serve constituents. If you’re being affected by the Schumer Shutdown, I encourage you to call Chuck Schumer’s office at (202) 224-6542.”
Impacts of the Schumer Shutdown on American families during hurricane season:
- Hurricane and disaster relief claims will experience delays during peak hurricane season
- Thousands of families trying to renew coverage are being left vulnerable
- Americans trying to recover from a storm could be forced to wait weeks or months for the help they need
- FEMA can’t issue or renew flood policies, delaying an estimated 1,300 home sales a day
