Congressman Patronis: Reminder – Tax Deadline for Florida’s Been Extended

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jimmy Patronis highlighted the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) announcement that it has extended the tax filing deadline for the entire State of Florida. While the IRS initially provided an extended tax filing deadline to Florida residents and businesses that were impacted by Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton, now all Florida residents and businesses throughout the state may choose to file their taxes on May 1 rather than the traditional April 15 deadline. Congressman Patronis also provided tips to avoid tax scams this tax season.

Congressman Jimmy Patronis said, “After suffering though Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton, Floridians deserve a little breathing room this tax season. As some families still work to put their lives back together and small businesses try to stay afloat, the last thing Floridians need is to worry about tax deadlines while they are still recovering. When filing your taxes, I urge Florida businesses and residents to stay vigilant of fraudsters who want to scam you out of your hard-earned money. Use some of the tips below to avoid tax scams.”

BBB Tips to Avoid Tax Scams

  • File as early as possible. File your taxes before fraudsters have a chance to file fake returns.
  • The IRS does not contact taxpayers by email, text message, or social media. Call or visit the IRS website to contact the IRS directly if you are worried about suspicious activity.
  • Only deal with trustworthy tax professionals or tax preparation services. You can always visit BBB.org to ensure the entity you’re working with is a trusted professional service.
  • Report suspicious activity to Federal Trade Commission. Call 1-877-FTC-HELP or visit FTC.gov/complaint to file a complaint or report suspected fraud.
